Power Amplifiers are the back-bone of any audio system. When some people refer to powerful amps as these, they are sometimes referring to PRO Audio Amps, like those used my musicians and DJs. However, others simply are referring to Home Audio Power Amplifiers that provide most of the connections to the rest of your stereo or AV System. These include models by Audiosource, AMC, & others. These Amps by Audiosource & AMC often include a pre-amp that controls which audio/video source is selected, processes the incoming sound signals, and distributes the signal to the separate channels and thus zones in your home. Others are fully capable of running a whole house multi zone audio system, Like those made by Channel Plus, Channel Vision, Breathe Audio, HIFI Works, & others, and others yet are made to run home theater systems without the need for additional Amplifiers.
Many Power Amplifiers have multiple channel / zone outputs for whole house audio. If they do not have multi channel capability, one will have to worry about low impedance when connecting multiple speaker pairs to one zone. Most units are capable of running at 4 or 8 Ohm. Ohms are a measure of resistance, which is monitored or measured as impedance. For a multi zone system without multizone capability, one will have to use an impedance matching / protecting device to run the separate zones so the impedance will not reach a dangerously low level, which as stated will destroy the amplifier. Connecting impedance matching volume controls in line or wiring to a multi zone speaker selector will achieve this.
