10 Gauge (AWG) Speaker Wire / Cable

Speaker Wire / Cable

Ultralink  Monster Cable  Phoenix Gold  Acoustic Research Terk  Belkin & Much More. . .

As we have stated, the stereo systems begins with the Speaker Wire! Although 10 AWG Gauge Speaker Cable is overkill for many home stereo applications, it of course has its place for extremely long runs and high wattage commercial installations. As with most audio cables, it comes in 2 and 4 conductor, CL3 In wall & Plenum ratings, and though expensive, in bulk spools for large jobs.

In Review, 10 awg is larger then 12, 12 awg larger than 14, 14 awg larger than 16, etc. So then when does one truly need 10 gauge speaker wire? My personal view is very seldom in home audio stereo systems. Maybe if you are dealing with a 3000 watt system with massive speakers that will die without wattage, or runs that exceed the eyes view (joking). One must realize though, many home audio speaker selectors and stereo in wall volume controls will not accept over 12 gauge wire, and most will not accept over 14 awg.

There are as many views and reviews on this subject as there are products, but to me personally, it comes down to what difference we as true audio lovers can hear. I know this world of consumer electronics can be confusing, but use your head when making your decision and do not be afraid to ask someone, as a GIN Installer, to help you choose the model for your application. I was going to include some charts on the recommended size to be used for certain wattage and run lengths, but too many of the charts I read contradict each other and one should not go by merely what a chart states, there is much more that goes into the decision. Again, do your research, and don't be afraid to ask questions: jwalker@olynet.com.
