Plenum Coax Cable, or Coaxial, is a Commercial Fire rated version of RG6 or RG59. To begin with, What is a plenum? It is a "compartment or chamber to which one or more air ducts are connected and [which] forms part of the air distribution system." Hence, one would need Plenum Rated RG6 or RG59 Coax Cable to run in such a space. Plenum RG 6 & RG 59 has a coating or jacket that burns at a much higher temperature and emits fewer fumes than standard cables.

The RG6 & RG59 cable is called "coax" because it includes one physical channel that carries the signal surrounded (after a layer of insulation) by another concentric physical channel, both running along the same axis. The outer channel of serves as a ground. Many pairs of coaxial tubes can be placed in a single outer sheathing and, with repeaters, can carry information for a great distance. Coaxial is predominantly used as video cable for TV / Satellite ( RG-6 ), HDTV, Home Theater, CCTV ( RG-59 ) and other home and commercial applications. It is sometimes used by telephone companies from their central office to the telephone poles near users. It is also widely installed for use in business and corporation Ethernet and other types of local area network.
