Hi Fi Power AV Surround Sound Receivers are the back-bone of any audio system. When someone refers to an Audio Video Receiver, they are usually referring to a Digital Receiver that is part of a Larger HiFi Home AV Stereo System. These Home AV Surround Sound Systems can entail Whole House , Multi Zone Stereo Systems that will provide Hi Fi Music and Voice to nearly every room in the home. The voice can be supplied from a TV signal or a stereo radio signal, but either way the Receiver is supplying an AV signal throughout the home. The Audio Video / Surround Sound Receiver can also be used to distribute a Digital Video Signal via AV cables in and out. Hence, these units are very flexible and thus why I stated they were the backbone of not merely a stereo system, but an entire whole house AV System.
Audio Video Receivers provide most of the connections to the rest of your HiFi system, as stated, including your television. AV Power Amps often include a Preamp that controls which a/v source is selected, processes the incoming sound signals, and distributes the signals to the separate channels. In a Home Theater application, the Surround Sound Receiver would distribute the signals to the front channels, center channel, rear channels, and variations of, depending on whether you were running a 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, or any other version of A Digital Home Theater System.
Moreover, many of these AV Surround Sound Receivers are fully capable of running a whole house audio system, due to their multiple channel / multi zone outputs for whole house stereo music. If they do not have multi channel capability, one will have to worry about low impedance when connecting multiple speaker pairs to one zone. In such an instance, one will have to use an impedance matching / protecting device. Connecting impedance volume controls in line (in series) will achieve this, as will wiring through a multi zone speaker selector with impedance protection.
