Installing And Wiring: Passive Audio, or line level In Wall Volume Controls are in actuality volume decreasers. One will set their stereo receiver or amplifier at the highest desired level, and the speaker volume control is as an in-line device used to decrease the audio output. When one has multiple units installed in each individual room or zone, it makes for a high performance but convenient audio speaker system.
To install, or wiring Multiple In Wall Volume Controls is quite simple. There are two methods we can use. The first is called Home Run Wiring. With home run wiring, all the wires from the individual volume controls are ran back to the stereo receiver or source. If the source has multiple channel or zone capability, you would simply connect the wiring to their respective zone outputs. If the source only has one output, left & right channels, you would wire from the speaker out of the source, into a speaker selector and from the speaker selector to the respective zone volume controls. Conversely, wiring in series negates the need for the speaker selector, but one must install and wire impedance matching volume controls.
Moving forward, when wiring the in wall volume controls you need to run 2- 2 conductors wires, or 1 - 4 conductor wire from your stereo receiver to a single gang junction box. Some units have removable terminal blocks and some actually have four wires already connected to the unit, and you simply connect your wires to them. Either way, you connect your four wires to the 4 wire input, and then from the 4 wire output on the unit you would run four wires to your speakers. Hence, we have an 8 connection control. 4 input and 4 output. After the cables are connected, you simply screw the unit into the single gang box, just like you would with a light switch or receptacle.
When installing or wiring impedance matching models in series, you can install connect from 2 to 16 pairs of speakers from one channel left/right output from the stereo. The impedance matching feature adjusts the impedance or resistance, measured in ohms, hence the stereo senses as if there is only one pair of speakers in use. You simply adjust a jumper switch for anywhere from 1 to 16 pairs of speakers.
Our line of these handy units is extensive, and comprised of rotary knobs or slide switch. They are great for nearly every room in the house and are an inexpensive way to help operate your whole house audio system.
