To begin with, What is a plenum? It is a "compartment or chamber to which one or more air ducts are connected and [which] forms part of the air distribution system." Hence, one would need Plenum Rated Audio Speaker Cable to run in such a space. I have also read that "the space above an acoustic tile ceiling would have to extend above other rooms in the same building or be open to ducts connecting it to other parts of the building. The concern is that during a fire, if there is burning material in a plenum air space, smoke and fumes can travel through air ducts to the whole building." Plenum Speaker Wire, or Plenum rated cables, are also called "Communications Plenum Cable" (CMP).
Plenum Speaker Wire has a coating or jacket that burns at a much higher temperature and emits fewer fumes than other Cables. Since the CL3 in wall rating is also a fire rating, we are already covered for in wall installation. Hence, it is obvious this is Commercial Cabling and one does not have to worry about them in residential applications. To home stereo installers, this CMP is something you need not concern yourself with, just stick with the CL3 In wall rating and you are squared away. . .
